Lake Hawea is at an altitude of 348 metres, covers an area of 141 km², is 392 metres deep and 35 kilometres long. Only the first 15 kilometres of lake frontage on the eastern side of the lake is accessible by public road. Lake Hawea Tours can take you beyond the boundaries of public access and right through to the Hunter River at the top of the lake.
Lake Hawea is a natural lake carved by a glacier and dammed at its southern end by a terminal moraine wall some 10,000 years ago. In 1958 the lake was raised artificially by 20 metres to store water for hydroelectric power generation.
